Course Overview
This one-hour self-paced online course helps improve communication and understanding between healthcare providers/staff and the patients they serve by focusing on health literacy. Participants will learn what health literacy is, how to identify patients who may have low levels of health literacy, and how to best communicate with a patient depending on their level of health literacy.
Learn specific tools and strategies to improve your communications with different patients depending on their level of health literacy. The ultimate goal of this improved communication is better health outcomes and reduced readmission rates.
With video of our highly rated instructor, self-assessment quizzes, and interactive exercises, students will be engaged from start to finish.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Analyze the affect of non-verbal, written, and visual communications on health literacy in developing plans of care for multigenerational clients;
- Incorporate evidence-based practices to improve communication of health information that will directly impact health outcomes;
- Integrate culturally competent care into patient interactions and self-care teaching;
- Use de-escalation techniques to decrease aggressive interactions and behaviors in navigating the healthcare system; and
- Employ the teach-back method when educating clients to measure understanding of health education which will affect their clinical outcomes.
How to Complete This Course
The course is comprised of a pre-test, a learning module, a post-test, and an evaluation.
- Pre-test: a brief assessment of your health communication skills. Grading is for your reference only.
- Learning Module with 13 lessons organized into 3 sections:
- Section 1: Health Literacy Overview
- Section 2: Health Communication Skills
- Section 3: More Patient Education Tools
- Post-test: a brief assessment of the skills you have learned in the course. Grading is for tracking purposes and is not shared.
- Evaluation: a brief survey to let us know how we can improve the course.
To receive a certificate of completion, students must complete all components of the course in sequence. You do not have to complete the lessons in one session. If you take a break and leave the course, you can resume where you left off. Your progress will be saved for all completed lessons.

Meet Your Instructor
Bill Jamison, Communications Specialist
Bill Jamison is a communications consultant and an accomplished public speaker who has been teaching courses through Rutgers University since 2002. He is certified by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as a Crisis Emergency Risk Communications trainer and has decades of experience as a communications specialist with the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH).
