This class is part of the Landscape Management Certificate Program.
Understanding how water drains through soil is an essential skill for anyone who works with landscapes. This course focuses on the drainage problems that are most important to you and your customers. Keep the water where it belongs and keep your customers happy!

Meet Your Instructors
Faculty Coordinator
Bruce Neary, BCN Horticultural Services
Bruce Neary is the owner of BCN Horticultural Services, where he has provided consulting services to landscape architects, contractors, developers, garden centers, nurseries, educators, and the public since 1994. Regarded as an industry expert, Bruce has written several articles for The Landscape Publication, Grounds Maintenance Magazine, and the American Nurseryman. Likewise, he has been a horticultural lecturer at Barlow Flower Farm and for other landscape organizations for more than 30 years. Bruce is a member of the Pennsylvania and American Horticultural Societies, Metro Hort Group, and Perennial Plant Association. He received his bachelor’s degree in Agronomy from Rutgers University and his Masters of Agriculture in Horticultural Sciences from Texas A&M.

Mark Borst, Borst Landscape and Design
Mark Borst, BSLA, CLT, president/owner, founded Borst Landscape and Design in 1989 and has grown the company into one of the largest design/build, lawn care, and landscape maintenance firms in northern New Jersey. His company prides itself on being a forerunner with its Organic Fertilization and Tree and Shrub care programs. He received a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from Rutgers University and is a member of Professional Landcare Network Association. He spearheaded the formation of New Jersey’s Certified Landscape Technician testing program and now serves on the Advisory Board for Landscape Architecture at Rutgers University.
Alex Burke, Burke Environmental
Alex is a third generation horticulturalist. Alex went to Rutgers University, Cook College, where he received a degree in Environmental Planning and Design, with a concentration on seashore environments. After Alex graduated in 2000, he founded Burke Environmental, a landscape design, installation, maintenance company with a focus on Jersey Shore properties. As Burke Environmental grew, so did the services it began to offer. Alex got his irrigation license and became certified in concrete pavers and retaining wall construction. Alex also became certified in wetlands delineation and wetlands construction. In 2015, Alex became a NJ Licensed Tree Expert (LTE). Alex oversees the day to day operations and growth of Burke Environmental. He still does some of the larger design concepts and drawings, and you also might see him in the field doing tree pruning/removals, project management, estimates, and snow removal.
